Captain Alun Wyn Jones said he was pleased with the character shown by his players as Wales held on to a crucial victory against Pool D opponents at the Rugby World Cup.

The Dragons led 23-8 at half-time but the Wallabies roared back in the second half and got the scores back to 26-25 at one point and looked more likely to win, but a Rhys Patchell penalty stretched Wales’ lead and they held on thanks to some dogged defending.

“I’m pretty happy with the character we showed particularly in the second half,” said Jones, who created history by winning his 130th Wales cap, setting a new national team record.

“Again, At times it did feel like the Georgia game where we had a great first half, and then we were a bit tentative in the second half like I say. So, we’ll have a look at that, but like I say, pleased with the result.”
