Usain Bolt’s next step in his quest for an unprecedented “triple triple” – gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100m relay – is a semi-final in the 200m.

Fresh from bagging a third successive Olympic gold in the 100m, Bolt said he was ready to rumble in his favoured event.

In the men’s decathlon, Ashton Eaton is overwhelming favourite, unbeaten in combined events competition since the 2011 world championships in Daegu.

Since his triumph in London, Eaton has won four more world titles — two indoors and two outdoors — and has upped his decathlon world record to 9,045 with his scintillating victory in Beijing last year.

In the 200m, Dafne Schippers will aim to crown her remarkable conversion from heptathlon to specialist sprinter with victory in the women’s 200m.

24-year-old flying Dutchwoman has emerged as one of the stars of women’s sprinting since abandoning the heptathlon following her bronze medal in the 2013 World Championships. There is probably no event in the Olympic track and field where a clean sweep seems more feasible than the 100m hurdles.

The phenomenal strength in depth of women’s sprint hurdling means that even the newly minted world record holder Keni Harrison was unable to make the team at last month’s trials.

US hurdlers have been overwhelmingly dominant in the event this year, with seven different American women posting the seven fastest times of 2016.

Brianna Rollins, the 2013 world champion, is likely to be the front-runner but could be pushed all the way by Kristi Castlin and Nia Ali.

Darya Klishina, the sole Russian athlete allowed to compete at the Rio Games in the wake of the doping scandal that has rocked track and field, will compete in the women’s long jump final.
