Would you stay in a favela at the over-crowded Rio Olympic Games?

Most tourists who visit Rio de Janeiro would only ever dream of visiting a favela for a couple of hours, as part of an organised group during the day.

Yet as the Rio Olympics role around, some favela residents have turned their homes into guesthouses and will provide accommodation for visitors and locals during the showpiece event.

Since 2008 the Brazilian government has been carrying out “pacification” missions, where the military is used to clear the favelas of gang activity and make them safe places to live. Only the favelas that have been pacified are allowed to host visitors during the Games.
