Luis Garcia surprised by Atletico Madrid’s poor start to La Liga season

Luis Garcia says the early season struggles of former club Atletico Madrid are the only surprise in La Liga so far.

Atletico, the Europa League winners and 2013/14 league champions, have taken just five points from their first four games, after finishing second last season – albeit a distant 14 points behind winners Barcelona. They’ve won only one of those four games and have already fallen seven points behind Barca.

“I was expecting a little bit more, with the new players arriving,” Garcia said of the club he represented for two seasons between 2007 and 2009.

The Rojiblanco brought in Thomas Lemar, Rodri, Gelson Martins, and Nikola Kalinic this summer and extended Antoine Griezmann‘s contract during a window full of high-profile signings. However, a damaging loss to Celta Vigo and draws against Valencia and Eibar have dampened the mood after a summer that ended in optimism.

Watch what else Garcia had to say about his old club in the video above.
