IPL 2020: Shubman Gill stands tall and steers Kolkata Knight Riders to a comfortable chase

Shubman Gill played the anchor role to perfection as Kolkata Knight Riders opened their account in IPL 2020 with a comprehensive win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Young Gill was in total control at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, with his unbeaten 70 off 62 balls wrapping up a seven-wicket win for Dinesh Karthik and his men. The Indian batsman was expertly supported by Eoin Morgan in a 92-run stand of which 42 came off the bat of the English limited-overs skipper.

The result means Sunrisers Hyderabad are now the only team in the tournament who are yet to register a single point on the board. David Warner’s men were left to rue a below par batting display, with the side mustering just 142 runs despite only losing four wickets in their innings.

The 142-4 racked up by the Sunrisers is the third lowest total in the IPL’s history for any team which has lost only four wickets across the entire innings.

A large part of their inability to put up a bigger total was down to a disciplined bowling display from the Knight Riders. Pacer Pat Cummins bounced back from his opening game disappointment, with the Aussie finishing with excellent figures of 1-19 from his four overs.

All this and more feature in our star picks from the clash.
