The Bulgarian Football Union accepted the resignation of the organisation’s president and head coach over the racist chanting suffered by England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier.

President Borislav Mihaylov and national team coach Krasimir Balakov came under fierce criticism for their denial of the abuse aimed at members of the England squad during the 6-0 defeat that saw the game stopped twice in the first half.

England’s black players were targeted by monkey chanting in Monday night’s match, which Balakov said he had not heard.

He later issued a statement apologising to the England players and to anyone offended by the abusive chanting.

Since then arrests have been made and the BFU fined by UEFA with a case set for October 28.

On Friday the BFU announced that five more men have been arrested over the racist behaviour, taking the total number identified to 16.

Six supporters were arrested on Wednesday with one an 18-year-old, who has been indicted for “grave hooliganism” and could face up to five years in prison if found guilty. The five others were handed fines and banned from future football matches.
