England manage Gareth Southgate called the racism faced by his players in the win against Bulgaria as “totally unacceptable.”

The visitors thumped Bulgaria by a 6-0 margin in the Euro 2020 qualifying clash but the game was overshadowed by racist chants from the Bulgaria fans. The racist behaviour from the home fans saw the game halted on two separate occasions in the first-half and Southgate felt that England had made the right stance by choosing to complete the game.

The match had been under the scanner before it had even started with England skipper Harry Kane claiming that the team had discussed what course of action to take should they be subjected to racism from the home crowd. One possible scenario Kane mentioned was the team walking off the pitch in such a scenario.

However, in the end, Southgate’s men decided to complete the game at the Sofia Vasil Levski stadium as they handed the hosts a major thumping.

Speaking after the clash, Southgate explained that England’s stance, as well as the score-line on the night, was a major statement against racism. Hear what else the Three Lions boss had to say about the controversy in the video above.
