Riyad Mahrez said manager Djamel Belmadi deserves all the praise after Algeria beat Senegal 1-0 in Cairo to win the Africa Cup of Nations on Friday for the second time in their history.

Baghdad Bounedjah’s shot took a huge deflection off Salif Sane and looped over goalkeeper Alfred Gomes.

Senegal, who have never won the competition, were awarded a penalty for handball in the second half but it was overturned after a VAR review.

Algeria closed out the rest of the game to win their first title since 1990.

“Getting to the heart of it, we’re African champions after twenty-nine years. It’s unbelievable, especially to be African champions away from our own country, the last one was in Algeria (in 1990),” said Manchester City winger Mahrez.

“African champions away is extraordinary. Big, big, big thanks to our coach Djamel (Belmadi). He deserves all the praise, he takes us here and he did a lot. So, true we are the actors but he did a lot for this team, and today I want to thank him, it’s thanks to him.”
