With so much at stake in the world of modern football it is not surprising that sensationalist stories appear in the press from time to time.
The more high-profile the club, player or federation, the more likely a story will be made up about them and here we look at five conspiracies regarding the actions of Wayne Rooney, Barcelona, Brazil’s World Cup team and more.
The frustration born of dealing with these stories is part and parcel of being a professional footballer but, you have to admit, the creativity used in some of these is more than enough to raise a smile on anyone’s face.
