Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel saw some special players during his time at Old Trafford, so who better to talk to about Wayne Rooney, the club’s new record goalscorer?

“To score 249 goals is incredible,” Schmeichel said of Sir Bobby Charlton’s remarkable achievement that ran from 1976 until last week.

“But Wayne has scored 250 goals in modern-day football, where, tactically, [defenders] are better-equipped. You’re up against defenders who are physically, tactically, much better than maybe at any time.”

“To score that amount of goals – it’s just beggars belief. He’s been a fantastic servant to Manchester United.”

“And he still is. There’s still room for Wayne Rooney in our team. He’s that kind of player who will get the opportunity and then he will show everybody, ‘I’m still here.'”
