Defending Dubai Desert Classic champion Rory Mcilroy admits he left himself with “too much to do” on the final day to retain his crown.

The Northern Irishman shot an impressive 65 to finish on -15, four shots behind eventual winner Danny Willett.

“I left myself too much to do after the first two days and I’ll rue the two front nines I played on Friday and Saturday,” the 26-year-old said.

The two-time Classic winner will now enjoy a week off at his home in Florida before playing the Northern Trust Open in California on February 18.
