Rory Mcilroy believes his familiarity and past success on the Dubai Desert Classic course places him in a strong position to mount a challenge for a record-equalling third crown at the event.

The Northern Ireland star is hoping to tie Ernie Els’ three wins at the Emirates Golf Club and insists the “home comforts” of playing in Dubai again can help him successfully defend the trophy he has won in style in each of the past two years.

“If I’m not leaving on Sunday with the trophy, I’m going to feel very disappointed,” he told the assembled media ahead of the tournament.

After finishing third in at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championship ten days ago, Mcilroy added: “I’m hoping you will see my game just a touch sharper this week.”
