Karun Nair became just the second Indian batsman after Virender Sehwag to score a triple century in Test cricket in the fifth Test against England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Nair managed to score 303 unbeaten runs before Indian captain Virat Kohli declared India’s innings at 759/7 – their highest innings total in Test history.

During his knock, Nair smashed 32 fours and four sixes as he registered the third highest score by an Indian batsman in Test cricket. What was most impressive about the 25-year-old’s knock was the way he increased his scoring rate as the innings progressed.

Nair was ably supported by Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as India had a total of four century partnerships in their innings. Both Ashwin and Jadeja notched up half-centuries for the hosts.

England opening batsmen Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings managed to bat out the last five overs of the day with the visitors’ score reading 12/0. They are still 270 runs behind and will be required to bat out an entire day to make sure that they do not lose the Test.

BRIEF SCORES

England 477 (Ali 146, Root 88, Jadeja 1/106) and 12/0 (Jennings 9*) trail India 759/7d (Nair 303*, Rahul 199, Broad 2/80) by 270 runs.
