Indian captain Virat Kohli scored a superb century as India took control of the fourth Test against England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

Kohli came into bat in the first over of the day after Cheteshwar Pujara shouldered a straight delivery from Jake Ball. The Indian superstar, along with Murali Vijay, hardly put a foot wrong in the first session as the duo scored at a brisk pace.

Vijay continued from where he had left off on the previous day and would go on to bring up his eighth Test century.

After the wicket of Vijay, there was a minor collapse as India’s score went from 262/2 to 307/6. Part-time spinner Joe Root, acting as captain with Alastair Cook off the field at the time, surprisingly brought himself on and picked up the wickets of Parthiv Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin in quick succession.

Kohli stood tall amidst the chaos before he found an able partner in Ravindra Jadeja. The two of them added 57 runs for the seventh wicket as India gained the upper hand again.

Jayant Yadav has impressed with the bat so far in his Test career and it was no different here. He was unbeaten on 30 at the end of the day’s play, with his partnership with Kohli currently at 87.

Kohli will resume batting on day four just three runs short of 150. During his innings, he became the first and only batsman to have an average of over 50 in all three formats of international cricket.

England have a tall task on their hands if they have to get anything out of this match.
