India have ended their run of three consecutive Test series losses against England after registering a eight-wicket win in the third Test at Mohali.

Resuming their second innings on 78/4, the visitors lost Gareth Batty in just the second over of the day. Jos Buttler came in and attempted to take the attack to the Indian bowlers, but perished for a run-a-ball 18.

Haseeb Hameed came out to bat at number eight, having suffered a finger injury during the first innings. The 19-year-old, along with Root, helped England wipe out the 56-run deficit before Root was dismissed for 78.

Hameed and Chris Woakes added 43 runs for the ninth wicket before Mohammed Shami bounced out Woakes and Adil Rashid in a single over with the second new ball.

Hameed would go on to register his second Test half-century before England were eventually bowled out for 236.

Chasing a target of 103, India lost an early wicket with Woakes getting rod of Murali Vijay for a duck. But Parthiv Patel and Cheteshwar Pujara put on a 81-run partnership for the second wicket to inspire the Indians.

Returning to Test cricket after a gap of more than eight years, Patel notched up his fifth Test half-century. With captain Virat Kohli at the non-striker’s end, the Gujarat wicket-keeper would hit the winning runs to hand India another comprehensive victory.

Ravindra Jadeja was named man-of-the-match for his all-round performance, having scored 90 with the bat and picking up four wickets.
