It looked like England would take an unlikely first innings lead when Virat Kohli was dismissed in the post-tea session on day two of the third Test against India at Mohali.

At that point of time, India found themselves on 204/6, 79 runs behind the first innings total posted by the visitors. But all-rounders Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja put on an unbeaten 67-run stand for the seventh wicket to take the hosts to 271/6 at stumps on Sunday.

Just 12 runs behind and with four wickets in hand, India will feel that they have wrestled the advantage back from England.

Earlier in the day, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami picked up the final two English wickets in quick time as the Alastair Cook-led side would get bowled out for 283. Shami picked up three wickets, while Umesh Yadav, Jayant Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja took two scalps a piece.

At one stage, India looked to be in complete command of the game with Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli building a promising partnership for the third wicket. But Pujara’s dismissal triggered a middle-order collapse as India would go from 148/2 to 156/5.

Pujara would register the 11th half-century of his Test career while Kohli would go on score 62 before being dismissed by Ben Stokes, with whom the Indian skipper had an altercation on Saturday.

Adil Rashid was the pick of the bowlers for England, ending the day with figures of 3/81.

BRIEF SCORES

England 283 all out [Bairstow 89, Shami 3/63] lead India 271/6 [Kohli 62, Ashwin 57*, Rashid 3/81] by 12 runs.
