The Indian opening duo of Murali Vijay and Gautam Gambhir got the hosts off to a solid start – ending the day on 63/0. Vijay is unbeaten on 28 while Gambhir will resume batting on Friday with his score reading 25.

Although the pitch has looked good for batting so far, there was some turn and bounce late in the day for Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid which will encourage Alastair Cook of enforcing a result.

Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 537. Resuming his innings on 99, Ali got to his ton on just the third delivery of the day. Ali and Ben Stokes were in an attacking mood and the Indian bowlers didn’t seem to have many answers in the morning session.

Stokes would also go on to notch up a century, the fourth Test hundred of his career. The English all-rounder, along with Zafar Ansari, would add 52 runs for the ninth wicket which took England’s total beyond the 500-run mark.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India, ending the innings with figures of 3/86. Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Ravichandran Ashwin picked up two wickets each.
