Lasith Malinga has confirmed he is stepping down as Sri Lanka captain ahead of the team’s defence of their World Twenty20 crown in India, two years on after leading the side to glory in Bangladesh.

However, the legendary fast bowler will retain his place in their 15-man travelling party and the Sri Lankan board have insisted it was the 32-year-old’s decision to call it quits as skipper, just a matter of days on from the team’s poor showing at the Asia Cup.
