This cavernous and historic stadium is rarely filled to its massive capacity these days. Situated in the heart of the City of Joy, India must hope the description is apt if they win through to the final on Sunday April 3.

HIMACHAL PRADESH CRICKET ASSOCIATION STADIUM, DHARAMSALA
This north-eastern outpost is the most picturesque of settings, nestling close to the home of the Dalai Lama at high altitude almost in the foothills of the Himalayas. England were its first international visitors, to play India in a one-day international in January 2013, but they will not be in action there this time.

FEROZ SHAH KOTLA, DELHI
Original home ground for the man a billion supporters will be hoping is the star of the tournament, India’s own poster boy Virat Kohli. England are due to play their last two group fixtures there.

M CHINNASWAMY STADIUM, BENGALURU
Well-known to England supporters as scene of both their shock defeat against Ireland and tie with India in the 2011 World Cup. Only India will be back for sure this time, with Ireland in the running too depending on the qualifying tournament.
Fixtures: March 20 Sri Lanka v West Indies; March 21 Australia v Qualifier; March 23 India v Qualifier
Capacity: 40,000

PUNJAB CRICKET ASSOCIATION, CHANDIGARH
This venue 160 miles north of Delhi is another which hosted a famous match at the 2011 World Cup, the semi-final won by India against their neighbours and great rivals Pakistan en route to the trophy. Five years on, India will face Australia in their last group match.
Fixtures: March 22 New Zealand v Pakistan ; March 25 Australia v Pakistan ; March 27 India v Australia

VIDARBHA CRICKET ASSOCIATION STADIUM, NAGPUR
This well-appointed stadium was opened only eight years ago as a replacement for the previous international venue in the City of Oranges – India’s geographical centre. It hosted the drawn fourth Test of England’s series victory over India in late 2012.

WANKHEDE STADIUM, MUMBAI
Scene of India’s famous 2011 World Cup final victory over Sri Lanka, and a spiritual as well as administrative home for them thanks to its association with the great Sachin Tendulkar. India could be back for a semi-final this time, but before then it will be an early base for England.

:: The women’s tournament also has three of its matches scheduled at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. Women’s semi-finals and final will precede the men’s, at the same venues.
