Ronaldo appeared via a live television link and his agent Jorge Mendes collected the award on his behalf while Florentino Perez collected Best Club of the Year for Los Blancos and Best President of the Year trophies.

Commenting on his award, Ronaldo said: “This year we won the Champions League and for the first time a trophy with Portugal. I won the Golden Ball and FIFA Club World Cup. How can I ask for more?

“The people still have doubts about me, about Real Madrid, about the national team.

“But we have the proof – we have won everything. It’s been an amazing year, I’m so happy. I have to pay tribute to my team-mates and my coaches Zinedine Zidane and Fernando Santos.”
