In Zurich on Monday Lionel Messi claimed an unprecedented fifth Ballon d’Or, making him the most celebrated footballer in history.

And while Messi stands alone with his five trophies, he is by no means the only player to have claimed the gong on multiple occasions.

All-in-all there have been ten players to have won the award at least two times, with Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano the first to do so when he claimed the prize for a second time in 1959.

From Messi’s rival in chief Cristiano Ronaldo to when Michel Platini was known more for his dominant role in midfield than his dodgy dealings with Sepp Blatter, here are the players to have won the World Player of the Year award more than once.
