Possibly the most interesting aspect of the FIFA Best Men’s Player award isn’t who won – but who voted for who.

As captains of their respective countries, some of the biggest names in world football were eligible to nominate their top three, including the top two vote-getters Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Above is a gallery of 10 of the biggest names to cast their vote and as you can see there are some surprising (political) nominations.

Of course by now you’ll know Real Madrid star Ronaldo won the award in London on Tuesday for his second consecutive gong.

FIFA released the list of the player’s vote after the ceremony and the decision process was based on votes from the national team captain, the national team coach and a journalist from every territory which fields a team on the international level.

A first-place vote garners five points, second earns three and third receives one point. The players were not allowed to vote for themselves.
