Signed by Juve as a 19-year-old to replace Zbigniew Boniek and play alongside Michel Platini. A success in his first season but injuries disrupted his development. Moving to Barca, Laudrup florished as an integral part of Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’.
JUAN PABLO SORIN
Juventus 1995-96; Barcelona 2003
Juve brought the left-back to Europe after he impressed at the World Youth Championships in Qatar but the jump was too soon and Sorin never broke into the side. Barca had him for a brief six-month loan spell before he moved to Paris Saint-Germain.
EDGAR DAVIDS
Juventus 1997-2004; Barcelona 2004
A mainstay of the Juve midfield alongside Zinedine Zidane and Didier Deschamps, Davids was described by Marcello Lippi as a “one-man engine room”. By 2004 he was out of form but his loan at Barca helped reinvigorate his career into his 30s.
THIERRY HENRY
Juventus 1999; Barcelona 2007-10
A lost six months in Italy as he was played on the wing and was ineffective. Arsene Wenger helped turn him into a world class striker and Barca then reaped the benefits in the twilight of his career as they won two La Liga titles and the Champions League.
GIANLUCA ZAMBROTTA
Juventus 1999-2006; Barcelona 2006-08
The rampaging full-back enjoyed the best years of his career in the black and white of Juve before the Calciopoli scandal saw Barca scoop him up. However, Zambrotta never really seemed to fit the Barca model and soon headed back to Italy with Milan.
LILIAN THURAM
Juventus 2001-06; Barcelona 2006-8
One of the modern game’s greats, Thuram was exceptional for Juve in the first half of the last decade. Like Zambrotta, Juve’s relegation to Serie B also prompted him to leave to Barca where he also shone but had to retire due to a heart defect.
ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC
Juventus 2004-06; Barcelona 2009-11
Turin was the first stop on his tour of Italy after signing him from Ajax. Among the exodus post-Calciopoli he signed for Inter before Barca took him in a swap deal for Samuel Eto’o. His time there was memorable only for his fall-out with Pep Guardiola.
MARTIN CACERES
Barcelona 2008-11; Juventus 2009; 2012-16
The Uruguayan defender was signed by Barca from Villarreal but could never break into the first-team and soon found himself loaned out to Juve. His versatility meant he was a good squad member but never a man to be an automatic starter.
