European Football Round-up: Chelsea eights points clear at top of Premier League, victories for Arsenal and Juventus

Diego Costa mended fences with a goal-scoring performance on his return to the Chelsea side against Hull.

The Spain striker was left out last weekend amid reports of a bust-up with manager Antonio Conte and interest from China ā€“ the official line was a back injury.

There were certainly no signs of discomfort against Hull for Costa, who was acclaimed by the home fans after putting Chelsea ahead during nine minutes of first-half stoppage time following a worrying injury to Ryan Mason.

Gary Cahill added a second late on to earn the Blues a 2-0 victory and put them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Arsenal climbed to second after a remarkable finish to their 2-1 victory over Burnley.

Leading through Shkodran Mustafiā€™s 59th-minute goal, the Gunners had Granit Xhaka sent off and were furious to concede a stoppage-time penalty, scored by Andre Gray.

Arsene Wenger was sent to the stands for his protests but there was still time for Arsenal to be awarded a penalty of their own and Alexis Sanchez showed a cool head to dink it down the middle.

It was another miserable afternoon for champions Leicester, who slumped to a 3-0 loss against Southampton.

James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez scored in the first half and Dusan Tadic netted a late penalty as the Foxesā€™ search for a first away league win of the season goes on.

Meanwhile, Paulo Dybala hit a fifth-minute opener and Gonzalo Higuain added a quick second as Juventus humbled Lazio 2-0 on Sunday.

Despite a poor record against the Turin giants in recent years, Lazio travelled to Turin looking to end the Serie A championsā€™ 26-match unbeaten league run at home.

But Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri overcame a number of enforced absences to send out a reshuffled side that should have finished with a far more generous tally, Higuain, his 87th minute replacement Mark Pjaca, and several other players spurning scoring chances in a fairly one-sided encounter.

In the late match in La Liga, goals from Denis Suarez, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar helped Barcelona to an easy 4-0 rout over Eibar at the Ipurua.
