VERDICT: Introduced at half-time for Shinji Okazaki, he caught the eye with several bursts of pace which confirmed his suitability for Leicester’s counterattacking style. United did well to limit the amount of space Leicester’s wide men were given which meant the Nigerian only saw fleeting glimpses of the ball. Overall, a quiet display but has all the tools to be a very exciting acquisition.

VERDICT: His primary impact after coming on for Danny Simpson – who he’ll be competing for the right-back berth – were his long throws which recalled the days of Rory Delap. One bomb in particular, deep in injury time, very nearly led to a goal. He wasn’t really that tested down the flank but providing his defending remains sound, he could be another weapon to add to Leicester’s arsenal.

VERDICT: The French midfielder is likely to be the most under-pressure of Leicester’s new signings due to the responsibility he has in replacing the (many) legs of N’Golo Kante. Mendy did what he could and looked busy and hungry for the ball without being able to influence too much on the match. His defensive attributes, in particular, can’t be properly assessed as United were largely one-paced through the middle. What did stand out was how composed he looked on the ball and he may well prove to be a different type of defensive midfielder to Kante.

VERDICT: He didn’t do that much before his winning goal; he won a few free-kicks but for long periods was barely involved, having to drop deep to get the ball. But providing the service is consistent, he looks a shoo-in for 20-plus goals. As his header showed in beating the towering Wes Morgan, he is dominant in the air and with Jose Mourinho traditionally liking his teams to play with width and produce crosses, opposing defenders better take cover.

VERDICT: The outstanding performer on the day. Okay, it’s only the Community Shield but it’s easy to forget this was the 22-year-old’s first game in English football, against the champions who also were one of the country’s most potent attacking units last term. Bailly was solid throughout; winning headers, while his awarness of the situation allowed him to make some key interceptions. If there’s one slight concern is that he dived into a couple of tackles a little too enthusiastically.
