Wigan 0-2 Liverpool: Three talking points from the Reds’ third pre-season win on the trot

Liverpool beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 in their third pre-season fixture on Sunday with Danny Ings and young Ben Woodburn getting on the scoresheet.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp will be pleased with the victory particularly after perennial rivals Manchester United defeat the Latics by the same score-line on the previous day.

Here are three talking points from the Kop outfit’s win.

16 YEAR-OLD BEN WOODBURN SHINES

After scoring in his first appearance for the senior team a few days earlier, Ben Woodburn raised a few eyebrows by hitting the back of the net once again.

The 16 year-old ran in behind the defence, latched onto a through-ball and slotted his finish past the keeper with ease to make it 2-0 to Liverpool.

It’s no secret that Klopp has no qualms over promoting youth and if he keeps taking his chances, he may be on course for a Premier League debut this season.

DANNY INGS IMPRESSING IN PRE-SEASON

Danny Ings is very much the forgotten man at Liverpool. After Brendan Rodgers signed him from Burnley, his chances at Anfield have been limited.

However, with the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Adam Lallana still on holiday, Ings is making the most of his time in the front-line and with goals in consecutive matches, he’ll be hoping the gaffer takes notice.

DEFENCE LOOKING COMFORTABLE

Despite Joe Gomez’s injury and Martin Skrtel’s departure, Klopp can be pleased with the fact that his defensive line is holding up.

Granted, it’s been in pre-season and against modest opposition but three clean sheets in a row is always satisfying for a manager and Klopp is no different.
