On the first ball of the fifth Test between India and England in Chennai, Alastair Cook became the tenth batsman to reach 11,000 runs in Test cricket.

Cook is the first Englishman to reach the landmark and at the age of 31 has a great opportunity to climb up the list significantly. The England captain, if he plays for another six or seven years or so, even has a chance to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test runs.

At the age of 31 years 257 days, Cook is the youngest batsman to reach the 11,000-run mark in Tests. He is the eight fastest to the landmark, with only Australia’s Allan Border and West Indies’ Shivnarine Chanderpaul taking more Test matches to get to the mark.

Currently playing in his 140th Test, the Essex cricketer has notched up 11008 runs at an average of 46.44 with 30 centuries.

Tendulkar leads the list with 15921 Test runs to his name and has a huge lead over Australia’s Ricky Ponting who is second with 13378 runs. South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and India’s Rahul Dravid follow Ponting on the table.

The entire list of batsmen to have scored over 11000 runs in Test cricket can be found in the gallery above.
