Freshly-crowned Roland Garros champion Maria Sharapova says her recent success in Paris has only sparked her hunger for more grand slam glory rather than quenched her thirst.

Sharapova captured her fifth major title at the French Open on Saturday in what was the longest final there since 1996, and despite the fact she is just 27-years- old is considered one of the veterans on tour.

She was ranked No1 in the world for 21 weeks and is one of just six female players to complete a career grand slam in the Open era.

But all these accomplishments have not left Sharapova satisfied as she insists she is eager for more.

“These moments make you keep wanting to do it. It’s incredible, the sport can bring you so much joy,” said the Russian. “They’re very, very quick moments. The world is still going on and revolving. But to have those few seconds of victory is so special.

“It’s enlightening. You put in so much work for just a few seconds of this incredible joy and that’s what keeps you going.

“I don’t ever think of perfection. You set goals for yourself to be better but perfection is boring,” she added. “I always want to improve and be better. Yes I just won the French Open but everyone is working already on the grass and I’ll be there next week and I’ll be working just as hard to try and win another Wimbledon.”

Sharapova’s sensational progress on clay has required her to work on her fitness and movement but she says she is far from being a complete athlete.

“I’m still nowhere near being a good athlete, I’m just a good tennis player. I’m not good at anything else," Sharapove explained. 

“I know there are a lot of players that are good at other sports, I’m just not one of those."
