Reem’s Melbourne Diary: Jim Courier’s charismatic post-match interviews, Djokovic sends message to wife Jelena

The on-court post-match interviews in Melbourne are special as they’re typically carried out by charismatic characters including the great Jim Courier.

The American tends to bring the best out of the winners he speaks to and yesterday was no different as he somehow got Djokovic to ask his wife Jelena to make a bigger family.

Djokovic said he realised things have been going up for him since his wife gave birth to their baby boy Stefan over a year ago. “Darling, I guess we’ve got to make more babies,” Djokovic said on court.

Funny thing is, Jelena isn’t even in Melbourne so he was sending her the request all the way to Monaco where they live.

Meanwhile Roger Federer spoke matter-of-factly after his demolition of Nikoloz Basilashvili but the crowd couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Yeah, I played great today,” said the Swiss legend. The crowd roared in laughter, to which Federer innocently responded: “I don’t know why they’re laughing.” Can’t the man marvel at his own greatness?

Story behind Sharapova

Maria Sharapova revealed she has already started working on her autobiography and she’s actually doing a lot of the writing herself.

“I’m working with a writer, and I’m writing myself. Yeah, I think that’s one of the reasons it will take a little bit longer because I want to write a lot of it myself,” said the Russian. “I’ve always loved to write. Something that’s been a passion of mine from a young age.”

Upset of day one

French No17 seed Benoit Paire was understandably furious as he lost 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 to Noah Rubin, the American ranked No328 in the world. Paire unleashing the mother of all racquet smashes at one point.
