Rafael Nadal will play at the Brisbane International ahead of the Australian Open, it was confirmed on Saturday.

The Spaniard made his first appearance at the tournament last year and that helped him as he reached the Australian Open final before being beaten by Roger Federer.

“I am really looking forward to starting another season in Brisbane. I’m so excited to be coming back in 2019,” Nadal said. “The field is always strong and the venue is amazing.”

Nadal who won his 11th French Open title last month is aiming to build on his 17 major triumphs when he plays in Wimbledon from Monday.

The Brisbane International takes place from December 30 to January 6.
