Al Ain Amblers blew the Nissan Rugby League Cup wide open with a stunning 42-40 win over title holders and favourites Abu Dhabi Harlequins.

Amblers have been impressive from the opening round, a game in which they led Xodus Wasps 24-22 at half-time and again 34-32 later in the game, before Wasps were eventually stung into action and ground out a 48-34 victory.

They then dismantled Dubai Sharks last week 100-6 and laid down a real marker on home soil last night with a two-point win at Al Ain Equestrian Shooting & Golf Club.

The Grand Final will also be staged in the Garden City in two weeks’ time and Keleto Dyer’s men are in the driving seat to make the Cup final.

Xodus Wasps still have to play the Sharks next week after their game last night was postponed because of a string of injuries suffered by the latter.

If they, as is predicted, win, then Wasps, Quins and Amblers will all be on four points and the two Cup finalists will be decided by points tallies.

Quins’ winger McMillan Chiwawa admitted his team were deflated following the loss but he remains positive.

“The result blows the title wide open and we probably need a favour now from Sharks,” he said. “Everyone’s a little down after the game but we’re trying to stay positive.”

Although Sharks and Wasps was postponed last night, the game has been rearranged for next Friday and it will be one a lot of people will have their eyes on.
