Al Ain Amblers get off the mark against at the West Asia Championship in Muscat

Andrew Rouvi believes Al Ain Amblers’ first win of the West Asia Championship campaign will insert a massive injection of confidence into the club.

Al Ain recorded a 33-23 win in Muscat, a first win in five outings in the competition.

Even more of a morale booster for the Garden City club will be the fact that it is a maiden win in 15s rugby for Amblers this term, having lost their opening seven fixtures of the UAE Premiership too.

“It’s our first win and it obviously gives us confidence,” said Amblers’ New Zealand head coach Rouvi.

“It was a physical game but the scoreline didn’t really reflect the game, we were 33-13 ahead and they came back at us late on, but we scored five tries and got maximum points and we scored some really good tries so from here we have to build.

“We’ve got Exiles up next and obviously we would love to win but if we can get a bonus point that will be something.”

Muscat vice captain Karl Rasmussen was disappointed his side could not pick up their own maiden win of the campaign, with the hosts now six points adrift at the bottom of the table.

“It was a pretty open game, either side could have took it,” he said.

“We were very poor at the breakdown, allowing them to turnover and use their runners in the counter attack.”
