When Hayes gave birth to her son Harry just two days after leading Chelsea Women to the Women’s Super League title last year, it was the culmination of a season-long journey that had tested her strength far beyond the normal worries of an expectant mother. Due to give birth to twins, she tragically lost one during her third trimester, and it is a measure of her strength of will that she did not relinquish her role even temporarily. Victory over Bristol City secured the league and cup double and Hayes was nominated for the Best FIFA Women’s Coach Award as a consequence. The 42-year-old has recently spoken of her interest in coaching in the men’s game but for now, she faces a battle to keep Chelsea at the top of the now all-professional English top tier, with Manchester United also set to join the first division next season.

– Hayes started to coach in the USA shortly after graduating from university and has since had two spells in the country, notably coaching National Women’s Soccer League side Chicago Red Stars.

– Taking over at Chelsea in 2012, she guided the club to their first-ever WSL success three years later, finishing above Manchester City.

– The Londoner often uses her platform to speak out on issues such as the quality of refereeing and scheduling in the women’s game.
