This week’s PSA World Series Finals is in Dubai for the first time, taking to a specially constructed court at Burj Park in what promises to deliver both a stunning backdrop for squash as well as enthralling action as the world’s best go up against each other.
Here, we profile five of the players who will likely catch the eye this week.
MOHAMED EL SHORBAGY
Age: 25; World Ranking: 01
It’s remarkable to think the current world No1 and favourite here in Dubai is still only 25 having turned professional in 2006. He has been in dominant form this season, taking six of seven possible World Series crowns, to record a points average of 2,240.000 – eclipsing the previous record of 2,150.000 he set just last month. It’s difficult to look past him this week.
GREGORY GAULTIER
Age: 33; World Ranking: 02
Nationality: French
The first Frenchman ever to win the prestigious British Open back in 2007, Gaultier has been ever-present in the world’s top six in the last decade. One of the most combative players on the Tour, the 33-year-old is arguably the best movers in squash, displaying a dazzling range of mobility and flexibility. The former world No1 will be a threat this week.
NOUR EL SHERBINI
Age: 20; World Ranking: 01
Nationality: Egyptian
The 20-year-old has been simply sensational this season. The most dominant force in the women’s game, she became the first Egyptian woman ever to win the British Open and World Championship. Blending sublime shot-making skills with quiet determination, she is the undoubted favourite to come away victorious this week.
LAURA MASSARO
Age: 32; World Ranking: 02
Nationality: British
One of the greatest female players England has ever produced, Massaro has enjoyed a renaissance year having contemplated retirement. A steely and tenacious competitor, Massaro is the embodiment of a never say die attitude and is one of the toughest opponents to beat on the Tour. She’ll be eager to wrestle back the No1 ranking she lost last month.
MIGUEL ANGEL RODRIGUEZ
Age: 30; World Ranking: 05
Nationality: Colombian
Rodriguez owns possibly the best nickname on the Tour: ‘The Colombian Cannonball’. The most successful squash player to hail from South America, his flamboyant skills and unique approach to the game make him a firm crowd favourite. The diminutive star has struggled in the early stages of this campaign but has managed to hold on to his No5 ranking.
