New England boss Sam Allardyce didn’t waste too much time in confirming that Rooney would stay on as England skipper following the team’s disastrous Euro 2016 campaign.

And the Manchester United striker became England’s all-time capped outfield player against Slovakia, surpassing David Beckham.

Only goalkeeping legend Peter Shilton, with 125 caps, now stands ahead of him, but Rooney – who has announced that he will retire from international football after the 2018 World Cup – said before the match that he was only concerned about winning and not the record.
