She has been dubbed Britain’s unluckiest Olympian, but short-track skating star Elise Christie could be set to make a miraculous return from injury in Pyeongchang.

The triple world champion from Britain was wiped out in a clash with China’s Li Jinyu in Saturday’s 1,500m semi-final, crashing into the barriers at high speed and being lifted off the ice on a stretcher in distress.

The 27-year-old was immediately sent to hospital but an X-ray revealed no broken bones and Christie suggested on Sunday that she might be fit to make the 1,000m qualifiers on Tuesday.

“Would like to thank everyone for the support! You have no idea what it means to me! I have so much love for my country!” Christie wrote in a post on Instagram.

“I’m physically so strong and fast right now so fingers crossed I can make a recovery for my best event!”

The Briton is the reigning world champion in the 1,000m, 1,500m and holds the overall title.

But she has been unable to replicate that same stunning success at Olympic level.

Christie was also a crash casualty in the women’s 500m final in Pyeongchang and at Sochi 2014 she went home empty-handed after being penalised in all three of her events.

The Herald, the best-selling newspaper from Christie’s native Scotland, branded her following her latest mishap “Britain’s unluckiest Olympian”.
