LeBron James tops scores for Cleveland Cavaliers but Chicago Bulls prevail in NBA opener

Chicago Bulls got their NBA season off to a winning start as they beat Cleveland Cavaliers 97-95 in front of watching President Barack Obama.

The Bulls, inspired by 19 and 18 points from Nikola Mitrotic and Derrick Rose, were outscored by the Cavaliers in three of the four quarters, but they were able to defend the six-point lead they earned in the opening 12 minutes.

LeBron James top scored for last year’s Eastern Conference champions with 25 points, but they could not complete the comeback and Bulls super fan Obama was left to celebrate.

Detroit Pistons handed down a surprise opening-day 106-94 defeat to Atlanta Hawks.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope top-scored with 21 points for the Pistons as the Hawks’ looked a shadow of the record-breaking side of last season.

An impressive 40-point haul from Stephen Curry inspired a 111-95 win for Golden State Warriors over New Orleans Pelicans.

He scored 24 of those in the opening quarter, netting four three-pointers, and helped the Warriors outscore their opponents in the opening three 12-minute periods.
