The Boston Red Sox were crowned champions of baseball’s World Series after beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-1 in game five.

The title win away at Dodger Stadium on Sunday night was Boston’s fourth in 15 seasons, while it was LA’s second straight defeat in the final playoff.

The Red Sox took the best-of-seven series 4-1.

Steve Pearce was named World Series Most Valuable Player, having helped Boston get off to a flying start in the final game with a two-run homer at the top of the first inning.

David Freese struck back with a homer at the bottom to get LA on the board, but Mookie Betts and J D Martinez helped the Red Sox rack up another two.

Pearce struck again in the eighth with another homer before pitcher Chris Sale closed off the game in the following inning.

Boston’s ninth World Series title sees the team tie with the Oakland Athletics for the third-most wins in MLB history.

The St Louis Cardinals have won 11, while the New York Yankees remain way ahead with 27 wins.

Nonetheless, Boston and LA rewrote the record books in game three, which was the longest World Series game ever.

The 18-inning saga ended with the Dodgers’ only win of the series.
