The British School of Al Khubairat (BSAK) might have fallen short in winning the Dubai Sevens but they will certainly remember the time when they trained with two-time winners Fiji prior to the prestigious tournament.

Arranged by Abu Dhabi Harlequins, a group of 12 pupils were taken to Zayed Sports City where they came up against the former world sevens champions.

The players, who were between 15 and 18 years old, pitted themselves against Ben Ryan’s side in a fun exhibition encounter after gaining valuable advice from the international stars. 

It was an experience that left the youths in awe.

BSAK director of rugby, Edward Lewsey said: “It really was an amazing experience.

“The boys got a  glimpse of what it would be like if they were to play at the highest level and to train with the world champions doesn’t come round very often. They were really chuffed to be so close up to them.”

The Abu Dhabi outfit went into the Dubai Sevens tournament full of confidence, having won their own BSAK tournament for the first time in November.  

But BSAK, led Fraser March, lost 14-12 to eventual winners Al Ain Amblers in the semi-finals. 

Lewsey admitted it was disappointing not to take top honours but the school can build on this success when the 15-a-side tournaments begin next month. 

“This is all big preparation for the bigger format,” he said. “We will bring in some new players but the core will be the same. 

“The attitude of the players this season have been first-class and showed great commitment. They should be proud of themselves.”
