The extra practice definitely paid off for Dubai student Jamie Susan Joseph, who clinched gold medal in the shot-put event of the CBSE Nationals in India.

Joseph registered an impressive 9.34metres, beating competitors from India and the GCC to the title at Devine Child School, Mehsana in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The Millennium School pupil qualified for the event after impressing at the CBSE Cluster meet in Dubai.

“It really feels great to have won gold medal,” said 13-year-old Joseph, who has won various medals in UAE inter-school tournaments.

The budding shot-putter is also a high-flyer in academics, having received the Award of Excellence for Mathematics for the past two years, while she also achieved a high distinction in the International Benchmark Test (IBT) in the same subject.

And the ambitious pupil hopes her recent sporting achievement will give her the platform to succeed at the highest level.

 “That is my ultimate goal and I wish to keep pursuing sports and be a champion and continue to live a healthy lifestyle to achieve that goal.”

Jumeirah College girls team put on a superb show to make their school proud at the CBD Athletics Championships.

Both the under-14 and under-16 teams finished second in their respective age groups that saw the girls participate in various track and field events at Police Officers Club in Dubai.

Thanks to their efforts, Jumeriah College’s PE department was awarded Dh40,000 in prize money in addition of the individual awards that came up to more than Dh1,000.

The stand-out performer was Ruva Makunda, who finished first in the 100m under-14s race, while Rachel Guest came first and second in the 400m and 800m duels respectively.

 “It’s great to see the girls do so well in this competition,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to see themselves tested against other pupils from schools across the region and hopefully they can gain confidence from this and carry it forward for the next events.”
