New England Patriots thrillers feature heavily in top 10 Super Bowl of all-time

1. Super Bowl LI

You can’t do better than this classic and it’ll be hard for any subsequent Super Bowl to top it. The Patriots pulled off the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history after trailing by 25 points, earning Tom Brady and Bill Belichick their fifth title. Oh, and it was also fittingly the first Super Bowl to go into overtime.

2. Super Bowl XLIX

This game is rightly remembered for Malcolm Butler’s jaw-dropping interception to seal New England’s fourth championship, but just moments before it had Jermaine Kearse’s unbelievable tipped catch. Had it not been for Butler, this would still rank highly among all Super Bowls as it had it all.

3. Super Bowl XLII

Before this game was played, it was a foregone conclusion that New England would cap off their undefeated season with another title. Eli Manning and David Tyree had other ideas as the ‘Helmet Catch’ paved the way for the Giants’ game-winning score to Plaxico Burress. A true David v Goliath match-up went the underdogs’ way.

4. Super Bowl XXV

Bill Parcells’ defence managed to slow down Buffalo’s K-Gun attack, but the most memorable moment from this Super Bowl came in the final seconds when Bills kicker Scott Norwood pushed his 47-yard attempt wide right to seal the title for the Giants. It was just the start of four straight years of heartbreak on the biggest stage for Buffalo.

5. Super Bowl XIII

In an era where points didn’t come so easy, the shootout between the Steelers and Cowboys was chalk full of entertainment. Hall of Fame quarterbacks Terry Bradshaw and Roger Staubach combined for seven touchdowns, with the former doing enough to earn Super Bowl MVP honours and Pittsburgh their third title.

6. Super Bowl XXIII

Joe Montana’s career highlights and accomplishments are a mile long, but perhaps his most signature moment came in this affair, when the San Francisco 49ers quarterback executed a game-winning drive and touchdown pass to John Taylor with 34 seconds left to pull off a 20-16 victory over Cincinnati.

7. Super Bowl XXXIV

The Greatest Show on Turf, led by Super Bowl MVP Kurt Warner throwing for more than 400 yards, completed their dominant season with a title, but Tennessee came just a yard shy of potentially changing the outcome as Kevin Dyson was stopped before the end zone to produce an iconic image.

8. Super Bowl XXXVI

The beginning of the Patriots’ dynasty, this game launched the career of Brady as he and Belichick pulled off a massive upset over the St Louis Rams to earn their first ring. Brady famously led a game-winning drive in the closing seconds to set up Adam Vinatieri’s field goal as time expired for the 20-17 win, while Belichick’s defense stymied The Greatest Show on Turf for much of the contest.

9. Super Bowl XLIII

Two plays from this game will be hard to forget. The first came when Steelers linebacker James Harrison had a 100-yard interception return on Kurt Warner’s errant pass. That was followed by the equally-impressive, game-winning touchdown catch by Pittsburgh’s Santonio Holmes in the corner of the end zone.

10. Super Bowl XXXVIII

New England’s second Super Bowl win ended like their first, with Brady driving to set up Vinatieri’s game-winning kick, but the rest of the game was just as captivating. Brady’s Patriots and Jake Delhomme’s Panthers traded scores in a high-scoring affair, but in the end, New England would not be denied.
