Wayne Rooney has been the catalyst for many victories over the years and on this day 12 years ago he added to his growing reputation as he came off the bench to spark an Everton comeback against Leicester City at Goodison Park.

The Toffees had opened the scoring through midfielder Lee Carsley in the first half but then fell 2-1 behind with Les Ferdinand’s ferocious free-kick firing the Foxes level before Jamie Scowcroft headed them in front.

That was the signal for the 18-year-old whizz kid to enter the fray and his impact was instant as he lashed in the equaliser to start Everton’s revival.

Tomasz Radzinski scored the winner but Rooney’s star was on the rise.
