On this day – January 15, 1988: India’s Narendra Hirwani makes dream Test debut against West Indies in Chennai

India fielded 19-year-old leg spinner Narendra Hirwani in the fourth Test in Chennai (then Madras) against the West Indies on this day in 1988.

Hirwani showed his class immediately as he helped bowl the Windies out for just 184, picking up 8-61, to give the Indians a massive first-innings lead of 198.

In the final innings, with the Windies needing 416 to win, Hirwani once again turned up the heat, taking 8-75 and dismissing the legendary Viv Richards twice in the match.

His efforts were enough to seal a 255-run win that helped the hosts draw the series 1-1.

Hirwani’s match figures of 16 for 136 continue to be the best by an bowler on debut.
