Indian all-rounder Ravi Shastri made it a habit of scoring big runs during his illustrious career, reaching triple figures 15 times on the international stage.

On this day 32 years ago, Shastri achieved a remarkable feat in the domestic game.

Playing for Bombay in their Ranji Trophy zonal match against Baroda, he smashed the fastest double-century of all time, taking just 113 minutes to reach 200 not out.

During the innings, he became only the second batsman to hit six sixes in an over, following in the footsteps of Garry Sobers (in 1968), with Tilak Raj being the unfortunate bowler.

Just a week earlier Shastri had made a seven-hour hundred against England.

Other memorable events that took place on this day:

1920: A new record NHL score is set by the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto St Patricks. The Canadiens won 14-7, and the 21-goal aggregate beat the 19 set three years earlier when the Montreal Wanderers beat the Toronto Arenas 10-9.

2006: Manchester United sign Patrice Evra from Monaco on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

2007: Walter Smith resigns as Scotland manager to take over as Rangers boss.
