On this day in 1942 Joe Louis aka the ‘Brown Bomber’ successfully defended his world heavyweight title for the 20th time when he knocked out Buddy Baer, brother of Max, four seconds from the end of the first round.

Baer had been knocked down three times before he was counted out and it was to be the last time he laced up his gloves for a pro fight as he retired with a 53-7 record.

In their previous encounter, a year earlier, Baer had become the first man to be disqualified in a world heavyweight title fight. Referee Arthur Donovan disqualified him before the beginning of the seventh round as a result of stalling by his manager.
