The year 1983 was a memorable one for the Indian cricket team, having won the World Cup in the summer, beating the West Indies in the final.

Later in the year, another historic moment came when Sunil Gavaskar not only passed Don Bradman’s century record, but also made India’s highest Test score ever with 236 against the familiar opponents.

Gavaskar batted nearly 11 hours to pick up his mammoth total and earn his 30th ton. He swatted 23 fours as he led his side to a 451 score.

Gavaskar eventually finished with 34 centuries in his career and held the record until 2005 when another India legend, Sachin Tendulkar, went one better.
