In one of the most memorable finishes to a Test, England emerged victorious in Karachi.

After pacer Darren Gough and spinner Ashely Giles picked up three wickets each in Pakistan’s second innings to restrict the hosts to 158 on the final day, England were left with a target of 176 in a little over a session.

Graham Thorpe led the chase with 64 as England charged towards the target in rapidly fading light.

It was so dark that the streetlights had to be turned on outside the stadium.

In spite of this, the umpires continued the game and England won by six wickets. It was Pakistan’s first defeat in 35 Tests at the National Stadium.
