Durability and longevity are two of the most underrated attributes in sport. One man exemplified those characteristics and then some during his Hall of Fame baseball career.

Cal Ripken Jr, known as MLB’s ‘Iron Man’, broke Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played by appearing in his 2,131st contest on this day in 1995.

The streak took Ripken 13-and-a-half seasons at his familiar position at shortstop and during the game against the California Angels, the Baltimore Orioles revealed a banner that read 2,131 at B&O Warehouse.

Ripken’s run would reach 2,632 consecutive games and stands as one of the most untouchable records in sport.
