Ian Botham will have happy memories of this day 37 years ago.

On the first day of the fourth Test against India at the Oval, Botham scored his 1,000th run in Tests to go with his 100 wickets.

The achievement was more remarkable given that is was just his 21st Test match, making him the fastest to do the double.

It meant that he broke the record of India’s Vinoo Mankad, who achieved the same feat in his 23rd match.

The talented all-rounder would then go on to captain his country and become the second player behind Garry Sobers to do the Test triple of 1,000 runs, 100 wickets and 100 catches.

He retired in 1993 with 528 international wickets and 7,313 runs.

Other memorable events on this day:

1991: Mike Powell jumps a massive 8.95m to clinch gold and set a new long jump world record in the World Championships.

1998: Damon Hill registers Jordan team’s maiden Grand Prix win at a rain-soaked Spa-Francorchamps.

2008: St. Helens wins the Challenge Cup with a 28-16 victory over Hull at Wembley.

2015: Manchester City signs Kevin De Bruyne for a club-record fee of £54m.
