England were in fine form in the early 1970s, having gone 26 Tests without defeat and when the Indians came to visit, the tourists were not expected to cause an upset against Ray Illingworth’s side in their own backyard.

In the third Test at The Oval, the Englishmen scored 355 and then gained a first-innings lead of 71.

Things were going according to plan before spinner Bhagwat Chandrasekhar ran through the hots’ batting line-up, taking 6-38 in 18 overs as England were shot out for 101.

That gave the Indians a target of 173, which they reached in the end despite losing six wickets along the way.

It was India’s first Test win in England, which also gave them a 1-0 series triumph.

More memorable events on this day:

2001: Liverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in Monaco to win the European Super Cup, their fifth trophy in six months.
